About The Examination
Every visual examination is comprehensive and covers every aspect of the health and vision of the eyes using the most up to date equipment available.
The eye test lasts about 30 minutes. During this time the following two areas are assessed:
- Health – eye pressure check, photographs of retina, visual field assessments.
- Vision – prescription, muscle balance, colour vision, reading skills.
The following groups of people are entitled to a sight test covered by the NHS:
- Age 60 or over
- A person with diabetes/glaucoma
- A person considered to be at risk of glaucoma by an Opthalmologist
Diabetic Equipment
We have a Henson 6000 Field Analyser. This is a computerised visual field analyser to measure the extent and integrity of a patient’s visual field. This is particularly useful for diabetics as it allows an accurate comparison of previous to present findings at each visit.
Nidek Digital Fundas Camera
This refers to a camera that photographs the retina of each eye. The retinal photos are essential each year. The retina is the only part of the body that you can see the cardiovascular system without surgery.
Glaucoma Equipment
The above two instruments are invaluable in testing patients who have glaucoma.
Reichert Non Contact Tonometry
This refers to an instrument that uses a ‘puff of air’ on the cornea of each eye in order to accurately measure the pressure of the eye. The pressure of the eye is an essential test to exclude or control conditions like glaucoma.
Visagraph
This is an instrument that records the eye tracking movements our eyes make when we read. The visagraph gives an accurate analysis of the different components of eye tracking in reading.
Auto Refractor
A computer that objectively within seconds measures a patient’s prescription at far.
Phoroptor
This instrument records and measures a patient’s refractive error (prescription) at far and at near.
