At Alexander Kobrin Optometrists, we understand that some children experience unique visual challenges that can interfere with their learning. Visual stress is a condition that affects how the brain interprets visual information, making reading uncomfortable and often distressing. As trusted specialists in children’s eyecare, we offer advanced colour-based solutions to help improve visual comfort and academic confidence.
Contact UsUsing colour as a therapeutic tool, we can provide targeted support that enhances reading fluency, reduces eye strain, and transforms the learning experience for children affected by visual stress. What Is Visual Stress?
Visual stress refers to visual discomfort and distortions when reading printed text.
Common symptoms include:
- Tiring easily when reading
- Letters changing shape or size
- Halos of colour surrounding letters
- Red, sore, or watery eyes
- Blurred or moving print
- Patterns or visual noise appearing on the page

How Colour Can Help
Research shows that the use of specific colours can reduce symptoms of visual stress. Coloured overlays placed over text, or precision tinted lenses, can improve reading speed, accuracy, and concentration. These visual tools enable children to read for longer without discomfort and may significantly improve their confidence in school.
At Alexander Kobrin Optometrists, we offer both overlay and lens-based solutions, always guided by the individual needs of the child.
The Assessment Process
Our approach begins with a full eye examination to rule out other potential causes of visual difficulty. If symptoms persist despite standard glasses, we offer two levels of visual stress assessment:
Overlay Assessment: Our optometrist guides the child through a colour overlay trial, allowing them to experience different hues while reading. We may suggest using a selected overlay at home and school for several weeks to observe improvements.
Colorimetry Assessment: If overlays are beneficial, we then offer an advanced Colorimetry assessment using specialist technology to determine the most effective individual lens tint. This method allows for a more precise prescription, often revealing a colour different to the initial overlay. Tinted glasses provide a practical and discreet solution that can be used with screens and books throughout the day.
